He was trained as an artist in Serbia, and learned all about firearms during his period of national service with the Serbian army. He moved to Toronto from Belgrade in 1990. A restless experimenter, Mitic quickly developed a radical painting practice, including his sumptuous and surprising Rain paintings—first shown at the Muramatsu Gallery in Tokyo in 2007—for which he placed his big, still-wet oil and acrylic paintings outside under the weather, letting a passing cloudburst complete them.
