By Dorota Kozinska

An American multi-disciplinary artist, he creates complex works in a variety of mediums from paper and canvas to sculpture.

Reminiscent of the labour-intensive collages by Brazilian Vik Muniz, his visual lexicon references everything from German Renaissance to Japanese woodblock prints, with a touch of religious iconography and Pre-Columbian Latin American art in between.

Self-taught and highly imaginative, Zupa integrates these diverse elements into works of art that are filled with mysterious narratives, often employing instantly recognizable symbols and personages.

And all are drawn and printed by hand, which in itself is quite a tour de force. Like Muniz, he likes to use recycled materials such as blueprints, envelopes and old letters salvaged from dumpsters.

His subject matter is as unusual and varied as his materials resulting in a truly original visual landscape.

Creative and driven, Zupa has also worked as a music video creator, which explains the theatrical, scenic aspect of his production. He lives in Denver.

His latest series on display at Galerie Matthew Namour explores "power, powerful people, and the collective mess that we are in," to use the artist's own words. Bring it on!

Galerie Matthew Namour is a continuation of Galerie Yves Laroche, which also began in Old Montreal, only to move to its current location at the junction of Mile End and Little Italy. Keen on thought-provoking street and lowbrow art - drawn from a populist art movement that arose in Los Angeles in the late 1970s, sometimes referred to as pop surrealism - the gallery showcases avant-garde international and local artists, both established and emerging.
