American photographer Diane Arbus (1923-1971) was particularly known for her photographs of marginalized people - circus performers, nudists, dwarf, giants..., or those with grotesque deformities. Some accused her of blatant sensationalism, but these images are only a fragment of Arbus' impressive body of work.
Selected by the AGO and purchased through the Fraenkle Gallery in San Francisco, the collection spans Arbus' entire career and includes rarely seen or published images. Among them are early photographs from the 1950s, such as Female impersonators in mirrors, N.Y.C., 1958.
She began in the 60's as a fashion photographer for magazines likeEsquire and Harper's Bazaar, and by the next decade published over 100 photographs as well as photographic essays accompanied by her own writing. Considered one of the most significant artists of the 20th century, in 1972 she became the first American photographer to show her work at the prestigious Venice Biennale. That same year, the Museum of Modern Art mounted a retrospective which toured the US and Canada. For a career that lasted only some 15 years, Arbus produced a truly impressive and revolutionary body of work.
Diane Arbus tragically committed suicide, and is often referred to as the Sylvia Plath of photography, in reference to the American author who also took her own life.
