Baillargeon, who lives and works in Quebec City, has dozens of exhibitions and performances under her belt and was on the list of finalists for the prestigious Sobey Award for the arts this year.
Cosmologie des chambres is centred on the theme of appropriation of space, in this case rooms and how we inhabit them. We are not talking about interior design, far from it. The paradoxical elements the artist weaves into her oeuvre struggle between the intimate and the common, between isolation and inclusion. Performance, photography and painting create a charmingly confusing visual universe, in which a room becomes a sort of inner sanctum for Baillargeon's muse. The images are also portals for the viewer to peek through, and walk into this unusual dialogue with space, and our relationship to it.
Her interiors are mysterious, at times darkened, barely specked with points of light; others infused with it, transformed into almost sacred places where angels might dwell. The artist appears in every scene, occupied with seemingly banal activity like scrubbing, yet her surroundings have nothing to do with the quotidian.
The exhibition offers a wonderful escapade into a magical realm in which everyone can find their place, their own room...
