It's an opportunity to delve into the little-known, but hugely fascinating world of bookbinding. It features 32 works by the most talented designer bookbinders and book artists. Any book lover will attest to the aesthetic pleasure of a beautiful book cover, the gateway to the magic of the words inside. The bound book fascinated princes, patrons of art and bibliophiles throughout centuries; the artists creating them inspired by everything from painting to architecture. Displayed individually in glass cases, the books, or rather book covers, take on the guise of an objet d'art. Intricate, stylized, they were all inspired by music in this particular case, linked with bookbinding as an important part of Quebec heritage. Many incorporated materials like metal, plexiglass, inlays and exotic leathers... Whimsical, intricate, they each found a way of combining the two disciplines, as in Joyce Ryckman's lyrical reflection on the notion of a disappearing musical note, bound with delicate twine... A special tribute is paid to the grande dame of Quebec bookbinding, Mme Simone Benoît-Roy, CMA, with a major collection of her works displayed on the top floor of the Chapelle. In addition to the design binding there are dozen or so hand-coloured papers, or other decorated papers like marbled papers celebrating music, be it history books, biographies or scores of music. Whether you are a collector, a bibliophile, or just curious about the world of books, this exhibition won't disappoint.
