For Spanish-born Alicia Lorente it is a work in progress, as she launches her second exhibition of paintings, nails notwithstanding, following a long career in photography. Her first foray into painting culminated in a solo exhibition in May 2012, and proved to be the springboard for this, her second independent show. From austere black and white geometric forms that were the theme of the first one, Lorente is now in the world of texture and shape, with masks, and yes, nails, as some of its main players. The geometric forms, the circles in particular, are still there, but in a different plastic dimension as it were. As much at play as in a visual discourse, she often leans towards the physical in her choice of medium and format, with both naiveté and audacity. Lorente is no newcomer to the art scene; she is a perfect example of this versatile and colourful, and endlessly self re-inventing milieu. Organizing her exhibitions in her spacious atelier, she is one of dozens of Montreal artists whose creative energy is intrinsically woven into the fabric of this city. Original, independent, her art fits perfectly into what many call the mosaic that is Montreal.
