As is the case, or should be, of any good artist, Barkley is an accomplished draughtsman, and underneath the naked flesh that predominates in his painting lies very good drawing indeed. We should now thank collector Bruno Petit for originating the idea of devoting a publication to this particular aspect of Barkley’s production. The result is a book of Daniel Barkley’s drawings, accompanied by a text by Jean-Émile Verdier. This is a limited edition of 100 copies, numbered and signed by the artist, and it comes with one of four original etchings made for this occasion.

The works in the book have rarely, if at all, been seen by the public, and unlike his paintings, have a distinct homoerotic aura, making the viewing so much more intimate. The intimacy stems not only from the subject matter but also from the bare, uncompromising statement that a simple line on paper makes.

Daniel Barkley was born in 1962 and holds a Master’s of Fine Arts from Concordia University. His many solo and group exhibitions include shows across Canada and North America (Toronto, Calgary, Montréal, New York, Santa Fe, San Francisco, Mexico City, and more). In 2004, the Musée d’art contemporain des Laurentides hosted a retrospective of his works, and in 2007, University of Toronto’s Justina M. Barnicke Gallery assembled and presented a collection of works defining his career to date. Barkley was shortlisted for the Kingston Prize for Canadian Portraiture in 2011, and his watercolours have won top prizes at national competitions, including the Canadian Society of Painters in Water Colour’s A.J. Casson Medal (in 2002 and again in 2012). He is represented in Montreal by Galerie Dominique Bouffard.
