His drawings are a labyrinth of images and symbols, a narrative wrapped in art, impossible to decipher, impossible not to try... Thousands of objects inhabit this manic universe that at the same time coalesces into art that verges on abstraction, but only from afar. This is Moodie’s fantasy world, chock full of frenetic visual notations that make his works on paper an absolute riot to behold. His brightly coloured paintings, on display for the first time, just add to the excitement. Moodie graduated from Montreal’s Concordia University (1979), and now lives in London, teaching at the University of Western Ontario.

His weird subjects, always astounding in their meticulous depiction, assert their own irreverent presence, drawing the viewer into what some critics call ’horror vacui’. Nah. This is but an expression of a fascinating personality and a mind that is never satisfied. To quote the artist: “as if there is never enough, not but all, all but not.”

In 2000, Moodie exhibited his drawings at Pierre-François Ouellette alongside those of Ed Pien and Oscar de Las Flores. In 2002, the AGO (Art Gallery of Ontario) presented his work in conjunction with that of Marcel Dzama.

It is time to have another look!
