On March 31st, this fascination assortment of objects will be auctioned off at Bonhams in London. Called by vice president of Bonhams New York, Jon King, ‘an accomplished collector’ of ‘extraordinary taste’, Bacall indeed amassed quite a selection. Included are exquisite works of art that her keen eye sought out, among them six bronze maquettes by British sculptor Henry Moore, as well as contemporary and modern prints by David Hockney, Jim Dine, Andy Warhol and Richard Avedon.

The many pieces by Moore, which also include his drawings, illustrate Bacall’s particular admiration for the sculptor. It began in the 1950s while she was living in Los Angeles, but it was not until 1975 that Robert Lewis of the Brook Street Gallery in London introduced her to the artist.

Bacall later recalled her first conversation with him: "The operator said Henry Moore was on the phone. I could not believe it. I said, ‘Is that really Henry Moore?’ and he said, ‘Is that really Lauren Bacall?’" When she finally visited the artist at this studio in Much Hadham, Herfordshire, the Hollywood star was herself star-struck: "It was and will be ever a high point of my life ... it was the realization of a dream," she wrote to the artist.

Bacall acquired pieces at galleries and auctions in California, New York, London, Paris and Rome. Her interest in African art was sparked while on location with her husband, Humphrey Bogart, for the film The African Queen (1951).

Some 750 lots are up for auction, and beside art, include English and French 18th and 19th century furniture, English Majolica, tribal works of art, jewelry, couture, and luggage by Louis Vuitton and Goyard.
A global highlights tour of the collection is ongoing.
