Neufeld has chosen the ancient medium of ceramic to create his unusual sculptures, objects of industrial or mechanical designation, presented in colour and setting that recalls plush salons. His Odalisque offers the incongruous pairing of a pastel-toned engine sitting on a quilted footstool, and it is impossible not to do a double-take. Lahde is a virtuoso with paper, her works are made of yellowed newsprint or pages from phone books, cascading in folded streams or stacked up in a honeycomb formation as in her 2011 piece Hive. At the other spectrum are Lane’s stylized metal sculptures made from fragments of cars and tools. A wall piece titled Veiled Hood is exactly that, a hood of a car but finished with a lace like border and suspended on the wall of the gallery, irreversibly transformed by the alchemy of art. But the works that have taken material and creative vision into an entirely new realm are those of Deslauriers. Ephemeral sculptures of everyday objects and structures rendered in transparent organza, stitched loosely, warped and fragile, suspended by myriad invisible nylon threads, they are simply mesmerizing. The vulnerability of the crooked Chaise roulante is tangible; with all the working of a real wheelchair, it is like an echo, a ghostly reflection of the real object. But the piece occupying the centre of the gallery space and drawing the most attention is a miniaturized church; steeple, shuttered windows, stairs and all, hovering on a ‘cloud’ of cotton, like some celestial fairy tale castle. With the poetic and evocative title, Disparition, it is Deslauriers’ tour de force and a beautiful work of contemporary, ethereal art.
