This is quite an exhibition, the first collaborative undertaking between the MAC and the Musée d’art moderne de la Ville de Paris, where it was first shown from October 10, 2014 to February 1, 2015. It also made a brief appearance, in an abridged version, at MUDAM Luxembourg from March 7 to May 31, 2015.

Spectacular, yes, still there is nothing daunting about this dizzying display. Whether one is familiar with Altmejd’s production, with modern art et al, or not... in this case it does not matter. The offering is multifaceted, and therefore, the reading can be, and is, as complex and unlimited. This is a playground, for both artist and viewer, with myriad interpretations and meanings woven into it, and what you find is yours alone. Dozens of diverse objects, mannequins, zebras, pineapples.... suspended on hundreds of invisible nylon threads and encased in giant Plexiglass enclosures, bedazzle and bewilder, mesmerise, and even repulse at times... only to draw the viewer back in. Giant sculptures, animal and human hybrids with glass and mirrors imbedded in them, tower over the visitors, alien sentinels at the gates of Altmejd’s world.

The artist’s message is universal and grand... it’s about humanity and the great unknown, about science and natural history, and it is all very, very esoteric. In fact, to this writer, Altmejd’s vision surpasses his means at this point, making this massive exhibition more of a preliminary presentation for a larger oeuvre. It may feature work done in the past 15 years, but it is still in an inchoate state, unfinished, evolving... Perhaps the materials that would complete it have not yet been invented; perhaps Altmejd himself is not yet ready for the final creative denouement... I just can’t wait for what’s to come. The excitement of anticipation is palpable, and delicious.
