Dans le contexte de l’exposition Ashoona: Récits intemporels, La Guilde a le plaisir d’inviter l’artiste sculpteure Ningeosiaq Ashoona pour une rencontre-causerie virtuelle. Petite-fille du sculpteur reconnu Qaqaq Ashoona et de l’artiste graphique établie Mayoreak Ashoona, Ningeosiaq Ashoona est l’une des seules femmes sculpteures à temps plein résidant à Kinngait (Cape Dorset, NU). Originaire de cette grande famille d’artistes, elle présente son parcours, ainsi que les sujets qui l’inspirent dans son travail. Que ce soit à travers ses sculptures illustrant des bureaux d’ordinateur, des huards élégants ou des transformations complexes, Ningeosiaq Ashoona explore une variété de sujets passant du traditionnel au contemporain. La rencontre se termine par une période de questions au cours de laquelle vous pouvez en apprendre davantage sur l’artiste et sur ses œuvres tout en détail. Depuis près de 25 ans, Ningeosiaq Ashoona — qui a grandi sur la terre de Saturituk, sur la côte sud de l’île de Baffin (NU) — est artiste sculpteure professionnelle à Kinngait. Issue d’une famille de maîtres sculpteurs et de graphistes reconnus, elle a appris à sculpter avec des outils manuels en observant ses grands-parents. Dans les sujets de ses œuvres, elle s’inspire de la faune de l’Arctique, de son enfance sur la terre et de son quotidien. Connue pour ses sculptures de huards fines et délicates, elle travaille avec des outils électriques et manuels, puis polit ses sculptures en stéatite pour leur donner un éclat donnant l’impression que les animaux viennent de sortir de l’eau. Ses œuvres ont été exposées, entre autres, au Canada, aux États-Unis, en Angleterre et en Suisse dans des institutions telles que l’Albers Gallery of Inuit Art (San Francisco, É.-U.) et l’Inuit Gallery of Vancouver (C.-B.).

Artist Talk: Contemporary sculptor of a great tradition | Ning Ashoona

In the context of the exhibition Ashoona: Enduring Art Stories, La Guilde is pleased to invite sculptor Ningeosiaq Ashoona for a virtual artist talk. Granddaughter of renowned carver Qaqaq Ashoona and established graphic artist Mayoreak Ashoona, Ningeosiaq Ashoona is one of the only full-time female carvers based in Kinngait (Cape Dorset, Nunavut). Born in this great family of artists, she presents her biography, as well as the subjects that inspire her work. Whether it is through her sculptures depicting computer desks, elegant loons or complex transformations, Ningeosiaq Ashoona explores a variety of traditional and contemporary subjects. The meeting ends with a question period during which you can learn more about the artist and her detailed works. Take advantage of this rare opportunity to meet this Kinngait artist whose remarkable mastery is evident in every sculpture!

Raised on the land of Saturituk on the southern coast of Baffin Island (NU), Ningeosiaq Ashoona has been a professional carver based in Kinngait for almost 25 years. Hailing from a family of master carvers and praised graphic artists, she learned to carve using hand tools by watching her grandparents. In the subjects of her work, she draws inspiration from Arctic wildlife, her childhood on the land, and her daily life. Known for her slender, and delicate loon sculptures, she works with power and hand tools and polishes her soapstone sculptures to a high lustre which gives the impression that the animals just emerged from the water. Her work has been exhibited in Canada, the United States, England and Switzerland, among others, at institutions such as the Albers Gallery of Inuit Art (San Francisco, USA) and the Inuit Gallery of Vancouver (BC).
